The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and characteristic moments – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. In the course of a few weeks, the US president began displaying the public his intentions for a gilded ballroom twice the size compared to the White House and then began solo dismantling the eastern section to erect it.
He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of fatalities from his cuts to USAID amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and this week research predicted his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no former commander would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which maintain dealings with the government.
We went from 'the gentle will obtain the world' toward 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'
As disorienting as it is to observe the president seek to颠覆 the old idea of democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who might not perceive it completely novel. That is those of us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed across decades as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of love into an icon of hostility who endorses specifically the brutality that he condemned in biblical teachings; this change developed more slowly, over decades instead of months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
Therefore allow me to outline the Christ from my upbringing, because theoretically Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and since the fastest-growing cadre of Americans may possess limited understanding about him because they identify as skeptics or doubters or nones. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with different religions; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of significant worth within Christian narrative.
It is emphatically definitely not the account of an authoritative monarch arising; conversely, an infant arrives to homeless parents in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to evade covert authorities. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his message is about love for other people, specifically for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and protecting. Jesus' answer to hostility is to offer the other cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a way to teach the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing states that when an individual takes your jacket you should give them your pullover too.
The apparent and direct truth that the Savior from scripture advocates for a type of radical love concentrated on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christianity rather a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but owing to its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Best Among Us
So I have been heartened to see the determined opposition to Trump arise in this past year. It has been substantial consolation to participate in developing the movement that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired voters to turn out in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the best parts within national heritage.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you receive him and embrace them or not?
The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by reference to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is best defended by relationship to elements that cause it to be special and magnificent, specifically the model of Jesus. In all circumstances does it imply feigning the most damaging of both America and Christianity was nonexistent; it signifies both modesty and faith, a combination that genuine American Christians should embrace.
